Exploring Perth (Some recommendations)
The following places can be visited easily within a day’s drive of Perth
City Centre (times are approximate for driving distance one way):

-
Fremantle (20 mins South of Perth)
has the famous Markets, the Maritime Museum and the Old Gaol. It is a
vibrant, cosmopolitan Port City on the Coast, full of entertaining
characters.
-
Cottesloe (15 mins on the Coast)
is a popular spot for
a Sunday Session and has a great beach front.
-
Scarborough (20 mins on the Coast)
is a mecca for young people on the weekend with a lovely beach, several
pubs and clubs and the best surfing spot in the Perth area. It has been
dubbed the Sunset Coast for obvious reasons!

-
Lancelin (2 hours)–
A favourite with the surfers. It also boasts Wedge Island and some
amazing sand dunes (like the ones in the movie, Lawrence of Arabia)
where you can try your hand at
sand-boarding!
(Recommended accommodation at Lancelin Lodge – ask Trev and Trish about
windsurfing).

-
Cervantes (3½ hours) –
Civilisation’s neighbour to the Nambung National Park, home of the world
famous
Pinnacles
Desert Rock formations. (Recommended accommodation at Cervantes Lodge –
ask Tony and Dineke about Don Quixote).
-
Guilderton (1½ hours) –
Camp at the mouth of the Moore River. A great place to chill out.
-
Yanchep National Park (1 hour) –
See the Yanchep Koala Bears,
row a boat
on the lake, go for a
horse ride
at ‘The Stables’ or play
golf
with kangaroos beside you.
-
New
Norcia (2 hours) –
home of the famous Monastery, where the Monks make amazing culinary
delights, such as home made pies, bread rolls and jams. The inland route
offers spectacular fields of colour in Spring when the wildflowers are
in season.

-
Wallyunga National Park (¾ hour ) –
the venue for the famous Avon Descent, where, in season, you can watch
or have a go at
White Water Rafting.
Our friends at Rivergods would be delighted to introduce you to the
thrills of the foamy river.
-
The
Swan Valley (30 mins) –
there is so much to see and do here, I can’t list it all and it’s right
on our doorstep. There’s the
Caversham Wildlife Park,
where you can feed kangaroos, stroke a koala or cuddle a wombat. There’s
world renowned
wineries,
restaurants, cottage crafts and art galleries, not to mention fabulous
bush walks in the Swan Valley Trails with awesome picnic sites.

-
York
(1 ¼ hours) –
This lovely country town hosts a Motor Museum and is the home of Skydive
Express, should you feel the urge to jump out of a perfectly serviceable
aircraft! (tandem
sky dive).
A tandem jump from 14,000 feet is just under $400 and you can even have
a DVD made to prove how brave you were.
-
Hyden (4½ - 5 hours) –
It’s a long drive for a day return trip but worth it if you are keen to
see the world famous
Wave Rock.
Other landmarks include Dog Cemetary (why?) and Mulka’s Cave.

-
Lesmurdie Falls (¾ hour) –
Not a big one but nevertheless a waterfall.
2. North of
Perth
From Perth, you can travel
North
up through Lancelin,
Cervantes, Geraldton,
Kalbarri, Shark
Bay, Monkey Mia,
Carnarvon, explore the Ningaloo Reef
between Coral Bay and
Exmouth on the North-West Cape, inland to
Newman, Tom Price and the spectacular
Karijini National Park.

-
Shark Bay
is called that for a reason! Nevertheless it is a lovely peaceful
town.
-
Monkey Mia
has to be one of WA's most photographed icons. Every day, usually three
times a day, the wild dolphins come in to shore to say hi, and if you
are lucky, you may be selected to feed one a fish or two, all under the
watchful supervision of our Marine Conservation Officers.

-
Carnarvon
has past links with the NASA Space Program, but it also boasts a
very long jetty and is a source of work for banana pickers.
-
Coral Bay and
Exmouth are the setting for an awesome spectacle - the largest
fringing reef system in the world - the Ningaloo Reef. Between April and
June when the coral spawns each year, you may be lucky enough to snorkel
alongside a Whale Shark, a peaceful giant of the oceans that harmlessly
feeds on plankton. All year round, however, you can interact with the
playful manta rays.

3. The
South-West
South-West of Perth, the distances are a lot shorter, so it is possible to
see most of the towns and sights in about a week. The usual coastal route
is to go through Rockingham, Bunbury, Busselton,
Margaret River, Pemberton,
Walpole,
Denmark, Augusta,
Albany and back on up to
Perth, or if you have time, cut across to
scenic Esperance, up the inland route to
Hyden, York and Perth.

-
Busselton boasts the longest jetty in the
Southern Hemisphere and offers an absolute delight for snorkellers and
divers. The Dive Shed offer regular dives to this wealth of coral gardens
and marine life. Another icon is the HMAS Swan ship wreck. This former
navy vessel was sunk around 9 years ago to provide scuba divers with a
fantastic 30 metre wreck dive.
-
Margaret River is renowned not only for crazy
surfers who tackle giant waves, but also for award winning wines and
gourmet delights.

-
Albany is the largest City
after Perth with around 25,000 population. The area still offers some
secluded beaches, however, and the natural attractions of the "Bridge" and
the "Gap".
