What is Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) and How is it Used in Business?

 

Let’s start with what is NLP?

It is an acronym for:

NLP-coachingNeuro – meaning to do with the nervous system and it’s connections with the brain

Linguistic – meaning to do with language or communication (verbal and non-verbal)

Programming or Patterning – meaning our habitual behaviours.

 

You may have read the book entitled ‘The Secret’ or watched the movie. Or perhaps you’ve heard about the ‘Law of Attraction’ or terms like ‘mental magnetism’.

If so, you’d know that we literally attract what we think about.

Even if you are sceptical about that, please read on…

You may also have heard about how we human beings communicate through ‘body language’ from the people whose works I have read, people like Allan Pease or Desmond Morris.

If so, you’d know that our verbal communication (language) actually only accounts for about 7% of what we actually communicate to other people!

NLP has evolved from studies of human behaviour, studies of our conditioning or programming, and how the way we think governs the results we achieve in life.

Understanding what makes people tick can be especially useful in a business situation, where you may be trying to influence people’s behaviour to achieve a particular outcome.

What kind of situations require you to influence people in business?

Here are a few examples:

  • Inspiring and motivating staff or sales teams to increase levels of performance
  • Influencing customers to buy your product or service
  • Negotiating business deals or agreements
  • Motivating yourself to overcome fears or limiting patterns of behaviour

The interesting thing about NLP is that we all use it every day and we have been using it throughout our whole lives.

The people who appear to get what they want out of life by influencing other people to comply with what they want are the people who use NLP the best.

Typically, the greatest leaders in history have been people who understood what makes other people tick.

Think of leaders like Winston Churchill, Napoleon, Abraham Lincoln, John F Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela and you will see that they had one major thing in common – their ability to influence other people.

They all came from different places and backgrounds, yet they could communicate the importance of their cause and compel the common man to follow them.

We could all influence people. In fact we all have, but imagine if you could learn to summon these skills at will.
