INTRODUCTION
Many years ago I read a book by Napoleon Hill called ‘Think and Grow Rich’. If you haven’t read it yet, I highly recommend that you do.
One of the most important lessons in that book is just how important it is, no matter what you are trying to achieve in life or in business, that you seek out and surround yourself with your own personal ‘Mastermind Alliance’ – that is, people who can help you achieve the results you are seeking.
In business these days you have to wear a lot of different hats. If you own a small business it’s no longer enough to just be a good carpenter or plumber or whatever it is that you do. You also have to be the ‘marketing guy’, the ‘personnel manager’, the ‘administrator’, the ‘Health and Safety Officer’, the ‘Social Media Expert’ etc etc.
So firstly, it’s important to have a good support network.
Secondly, it’s really helpful if you access someone else’s knowledge and experience.
Have someone in your support team who has already run their own business and understands what it takes to make it work.
Use other people’s knowledge. Learn from what worked and what didn’t work. That will save you time and money.
I never finished my formal education to the level I would have liked. I was too busy learning to become a good manager, then a good business owner.
I learned most of my lessons the hard way, by trial and error.
Nevertheless, I have always been committed to a continuous improvement programme in my life – it’s what the Japanese call ‘Kaizen’, but when I sold my core tourism business in 2010, I then spent most of 2011 cramming my brain full of business training resources.
The full list of training I have undertaken is too exhaustive to mention here, (though I’ve obviously studied the successes and writings of business people like Sir Richard Branson, Peter Drucker, Stephen Covey, Dr John Demartini, Michael Gerber and many more) but through 2011 to 2012 I invested over $60,000 on coaching and training courses (plus flights, accommodation and books), so that I could better serve my new clients. It’s a process of self-education and personal development to which I am committed for life.
I’m pleased and proud to say that the results have been life-changing, not only for me, but more importantly for many of my customers- see client testimonials.
In 2011, I told my life story to Phil Doyle, the Programme Director at the Curtin University Business School’s Centre for Entrepreneurship.
He said, “You’ve certainly gained the battle scars that make you a great candidate to help the business owners going through our Curtin Growth Programme. I’d be delighted to have you as one of our Business Mentors.’
It’s an association of which I was very proud, though I decided to focus more on Club Red’s planned growth at the end of 2012.
Here is the programme I have developed for our private clients, which combines the kind of theoretical, intellectual know-how that I have learned from over $80,000 worth of courses, with my own 34 years of hands-on experience.
